Anna
Anna is Kate's yonger sister, who was born to be a genetic match for Kate if she should ever need anything to fight against her battle with leukemia. Anna is now sick of being the backup for Kate’s treatment. She wants to save Kate, but at the same time wants her own medical freedom. She files a law suit against her parents in the hopes that she can be granted medical emancipation.
Kate
Kate is the first daughter of Sara and Brian, and is diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. In order for her to have a chance to live she sometimes may need things such as stem cells or bone marrow, which require a doner. The doctors say someone related to her is the best doner, however her brother isn't a match, therefore her parents decide to have another child that is genetically engineered, Anna. Throughout the novel, Kate is struggling for her life with her battle against Leukemia.
Jesse
Jesse is the eldest son of Sara and Jesse. He struggles with his family becuase he is often forgotten and left out. His needs are always placed behind the girls and his parents rarly seem to notice him. Jesse even lives in a room above the garage and has virtually no parental supervision.
Sara
Sara is Jesse, Kate and Anna's mother. She is a one time lawyer and has been taking care of her children since they were born. When Anna files her lawsuit against her parents, Sara decides that she will represent her self on trial. There is no doubt that Sara loves her children, but is often critized for her apparent care for Kate over Anna and is forced into a situation that she never wanted to happen.
Brian
Brian is the father of Jesse, Kate and Anna. He is a cheif firefighter and spends half his time at the station and half the time at home. Brian is the person that helps keep Anna grounded and does his best to help her make the right decision.
Campbell
Anna hires Campbell as her lawyer when she files her lawsuit agianst her parents. Before Campbell took Anna's case he was a selfish lawyer who only chose cases to make himself look good, but with Julia (his ex-girlfriend) and Anna in his life, he finds himself evolving into a person he never knew he was. Campbell does everything in his power to help Anna win the case.
Julia
Julia is the guardian ad litem assigned to Anna's case. Basically, she is incharge of observing Anna and reporting to the Judge what she feels would be the best thing to do. Julia also happens to be the ex-girlfriend of Campbell and is faced with her past coming back into her life. Throughout the novel, Julia provides insight and helps others figure out who they truly are.
