~THEMES DEVELOPED~

Popular Themes Within

The novel My Sister's Keeper, focuses around the theme of family tragedy. Jodi Picoult portrays Anna' family through the good and the bad. She shows what a mother how far a mother will go in order to protect her child, even if that means putting another child in danger. The novel shows how each character is affected by Kate's cancer and how they deal with their lives. Each character is struggling to communicate and get along with others. Not only is Anna trying to find a way to deal with her sister's cancer, but Sara and Brian are also forced to deal with the problems of their children and even Campbell and Julia fit into this theme. The one time lovers now are faced with their broken relationship in the present day.

Through all of the struggle and heartbreak that the novel presents there is also another strong theme that emerges, love. It is evident that Sara clearly loves her family and wants to do anything to protect them. Brian also shows his love by helping Anna decide what she should do. As for Jesse, although he may seem forgotten, one cannot forget the scene of him and Sara in the car when she finds out that he was donating platelets to help Kate without anyone even knowing. This shows how good of a person he is.
At the end of the novel, Brian also reveals that he has loved Julia ever since the broke up and that the only reason he broke up with her in the first place was because he did not want her to have to deal with his seizures. It is also evident that Julia feels the same way by how her sister talks and her frequent visits to the bar. They have both clearly been in love even with all the years apart.
